Texas Ramblin’ Roses Chapter
Goliad State Park
The Roses always have fun at this state park, located on the San Antonio River and complete with a restored Spanish colonial era mission that can be toured. There is plenty to do nearby, including tours of other missions and ruins, museums and other historic sites that give information ranging from local military and ranching history to the story of the King’s Road. After visiting historic sites, you can hike or bike local trails or fish or paddle the San Antonio River. You can borrow fishing gear at the park, and you do not need a fishing license to fish from the shore. To paddle, you will need to provide your own kayak or canoe, but if you put in upstream, the park is a take-out point for the 6.6-mile Goliad Paddling Trail. Birders can visit the Cardinal’s Haven Bird Blind or explore nearby loops of the Great Texas Birding Trail.
Make your reservations up to five months in advance at tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservations/ or by phone at 512-389-8900. There is a daily entrance fee of $2 to $4 (depending on what pass you have) on top of the camping fees and the park has a dump station.
The Karankawa camping area has full-hookup, pull-through sites ($25/night) and are toward the front of the park near the mission. This area also has screened shelters available ($25/night). Louvered windows surround half the shelter. Tents and small pop-up RVs are allowed outside the shelters. Pets are not allowed inside shelters and must be kept outside on a leash and not left unattended. Shelters include ceiling fan, water, electric, interior light, fire ring and grill, picnic table inside and outside, restrooms nearby. The Jacales camping area ($20/night) includes sites 21 to 26, 32 to 33 and 39 to 44 and sites have 20/30/50-amp electric, water, picnic table, grill and fire ring. This area allows tents and is located near the back of the park by the Group Hall, which will be used as our Rally Room.
