One of our Heart of Dixie members recently introduced me to the most tranquil group of campsites at Bogue Chitto State Park in Louisiana, and I can’t wait to share it with y’all! Bogue Chitto State Park offers tubing and kayaking (rentals and transportation available). There is also a five-mile hiking trail loop.

Make your reservations online at louisianastateparks.reserveamerica.com and search for Bogue Chitto, or call the Louisiana State Parks Reservation Center at 877-226-7652.

I’ve booked site CI124. Sites CI123 and CI126 are also riverfront sites. “Riverfront” is an overstatement; it’s a little tributary of the Bogue Chitto River with a sandy riverbed where you can while away the day sitting under large shade trees with your feet in the water. Site CI125 is directly across from CI124 and CI127 is a little further down the cul-de-sac. The noted sites are in the Bottomland RV area where there is electricity and water but no sewer hookups (a dump station is available). If you need full hookups, you can book in the Upland RV area, but the two areas are about 1 mile apart. It is an easy bike ride downhill but an almost impossible return trip except for the fittest, so you will probably need to have a car/truck if you book in the Upland.

Camping in Louisiana in August is hot, so activities will be planned with the heat in mind. While there will be no official host organizing activities in advance, we will have no problem coming up with things we all want to do and, as is usually the case, dinners are a joint effort with whatever we campers have available in the fridge and pantry.

After making your reservation, PLEASE send your name, contact info, and site number to Mary Quaid at mfq@cox.net or 225-936-9328 and RSVP on the RVW website. As for your camping checklist, you may want to bring a low-profile beach chair for sitting in the river or a chair you don't mind getting wet, water shoes, a life vest for water activities, an oversized hat and plenty of bug spray.
